When the port fell, the Reds executed 33,000 of the remaining soldiers.

However, a contingent of determined Soviet sailors managed to keep control of the docks, denying their use by the invaders for resupply. The sailors held out for over seven months, until the city was liberated by advancing Soviet armies. Commemorating their brave resistance, Novorossiysk was one of twelve cities of the Soviet Union to be awarded the title of 'Hero City.'
