>The Medjay were an ancient people from what is now eastern Sudan. The term 'Medjay' originally referred to a tribe of Nubians who served as mercenaries to Egypt during the Old Kingdom period. Due to their stellar performance in combat, they were employed as infantry and explorers that protected Egyptian borders. During the New Kingdom of Egypt, the Medjay evolved into an elite desert police force that was used to defend valuable areas of Pharaonic interest such as capital cities and the royal cemeteries. Medjay were proficient with an array of weapons, but they were particularly known for their skill with the bow.
