>세포이는 유럽 식민지 군대가 고용한 인도 병사들이며, 그중 영국 동인도 회사가 고용한 병사들이 가장 유명했습니다. 1857년 세포이는 자신들이 입으로 물어야 했던 실탄이 각각 힌두교와 이슬람교에서 신성시하는 소나 돼지의 지방으로 칠해져 있었다는 소문이 일어나자 반란을 일으켰습니다. 항쟁은 규모가 커지면서 결국 동인도 회사가 해체되고 인도는 영국의 직접 통치를 받게 되었습니다. 세포이는 2차 세계대전까지 영국 용병으로 계속 활동했으며, 현대 인도 아대륙의 군대에서는 이등병 계급을 나타내는 용어로 사용되고 있습니다.

>Sepoys were soldiers from India employed by European colonial armies, most famously that of the British East India Company. In 1857, the sepoys mutinied due to rumors that the cartridges they had to bite were greased with the fat of cows or pigs, sacrilegious to Hindus and Muslims respectively. The rebellion was so devastating that it led to the loss of all Company power and the establishment of direct Crown control over India. Sepoys continued to serve Britain through World War II, and modern armies of the Indian subcontinent use the term to denote the rank of private.
