>M551 쉐리던은 1960년대 말부터 1996년까지 생산된 미군의 경전차이었습니다. 비행기에서 낙하가 가능하며 물을 천천히 건널 수 있습니다. 거대한 152mm 포탄이나 실레일리 유도 미사을 발사할 수 있는 중포가 주포로 장착되어 있습니다. 그 때문에 무게는 가벼워도 적군 병사와 중전차 모두에게 파괴적 영향을 미칩니다.

>쉐리던은 인기가 많았지만 주요한 결함도 있었습니다. 주포가 너무 강력해서 전차가 땅 위로 들어 올려지면서 아군에게 부상을 입히거나, 전자 작동 부분이 망가질 수 있는 위험이 있었습니다. 또한 장갑력이 부족해 베트남군의 RPG와 지뢰에 취약했습니다. 결국 대체할 무기 없이 쉐리던은 사라졌습니다. 미군이 MBT(Main Battle Tanks)를 선호해 경전차를 포기한 결과이었습니다.

>The M551 Sheridan was a light tank produced for the U.S. Army from the late 1960s until 1996. It was capable of being parachuted from aircraft or moving slowly through water. The model sported a heavy main gun that could launch massive 152mm shells or Shillelagh guided missiles. This made it devastating against both enemy personnel and heavier tanks despite its light weight.

>Though the Sheridan was popular among the troops, it had major deficiencies. The main gun was so powerful that it lifted the tank off the ground when it fired, potentially injuring the crew and scrambling its own electronics. Its lack of heavy armor also left it vulnerable to Vietnamese RPGs and mines. The Sheridan was eventually retired with no replacement, a consequence of the U.S. Army’s abandonment of light tanks in favor of the main battle tank.
