>레프트위치 트로피는 1979년부터 미국 해병대에서 뛰어난 리더십을 보인 군인에게 매해 수여해 온 상입니다. 수상자는 함대 해병대의 지상군과 함께 근무하는 해군 캡틴이어야 합니다. 대서양과 태평양 함대 해병대의 지휘관은 각각 3 명의 후보를 추천하며 이 중 한 명이 선택됩니다.

>이 상의 이름은 베트남전에서 사망한 중령 윌리엄 G. 레프트위치 주니어의 이름을 따서 붙여졌습니다. 그는 1965년 호아 아잉 전투에서 영웅적 행위로 해군 수훈장과 퍼플 하트 메달을 수여 받았습니다. 그의 두 번째 임무는 1970년 4월에 시작되었는데 그는 모든 비상 탈출 미션에 직접 참여하겠다고 주장했습니다. 그는 해당 미션을 수행하다가 동일한 해 11월 18일 헬리콥터 사고로 사망했습니다.

>The Leftwich Trophy is a U.S. Marine Corps award given annually since 1979 for outstanding leadership. The recipient must be a marine captain serving with the ground forces of the Fleet Marine Force. The commanding generals of the Marine Corps of the Atlantic and the Pacific each put forth three candidates, from which one recipient is chosen.

>The award is named after Lt. Col. William G. Leftwich Jr. who served as an officer during the Vietnam War. In 1965, he was awarded a Navy Cross and Purple Heart for his heroism during the Battle of Hoai An. He began his second tour of duty in April 1970, making a point to personally accompany every emergency extraction mission. It was during one of these missions that he was killed in a helicopter crash on November 18th that same year.
