>Considered one of the greatest leaders of the 20th century, Winston Churchill served the cause of the British Empire for nearly 60 years as soldier, writer, and statesman. He began his political career as a Conservative Member of Parliament in 1900, but crossed over to the Liberals from 1904–24, where he led the effort to establish minimum wages and near-universal health insurance. In the 1930s, his was one of the few voices who warned against the rising power of Nazi Germany - a very unpopular stance in a country still reeling from the carnage of WWI. With Hitler’s invasion of Poland in 1939, his predictions of another global war proved correct, and he became Prime Minister just before the Blitzkrieg stormed through France in 1940. For the next year, England stood alone, absorbing punishing air attacks during the Battle of Britain. Churchill embodied the country's spirit of defiance in fiery speeches, including his famous exhortation: 'Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves, that if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, This was their finest hour.'
