>토론토는 1700년대 후반 영국군의 손에 넘어간 후 "요크"라는 이름으로 세워졌습니다. 기존에 그 마을은 캐나다 북부의 모피 교역을 통제하기 위한 전략적 정착지였습니다. 토론토는 19세기 중반 사용되었던 지하철도에서 중요한 역할을 맡았으며, 최근에 해방된 노예들이 캐나다와 미국 북부의 자유주로 안전하게 이동하게 해주었습니다. 당시 토론토에는 전 세계에서 온 이민자들 역시 다수 유입되어, 도시의 인구와 규모가 빠르게 증가했습니다.

>In the late 1700’s, Toronto was founded as “The Town of York” after the land had been surrendered to the British. Previously, the Town had been a strategic settlement used to control the fur trade in the northern regions of Canada. Toronto played a key role in the Underground Railroad that was used in the early to mid 19th century, allowing recently freed slaves safe passage to Canada and free states of the Northern United States. During this time, Toronto also housed many immigrants from across the world, rapidly increasing the population and size of the city.
