After Japan’s World War II surrender, the United States and the Soviet Union divided the Korean peninsula along the 38th parallel with the North being ruled under communism and the South being democratized. Before the outbreak of the Korean War, the two Koreas engaged in many skirmishes resulting in casualties along the 38th parallel.

The Korean War is still ongoing as a peace treaty between the two Koreas has yet to be formally signed.
