Despite its design as a tank destroyer, the Ontos was mostly used as an anti-infantry unit due to the lack of tanks deployed by the North Vietnamese Army. It was equipped with six M40 recoilless rifles that could be fired in rapid succession to ensure that its target was destroyed. This made the Ontos particularly useful at flushing out enemy infantry from cover. Its lightweight design provided it with outstanding mobility and allowed it to travel in confined spaces where larger vehicles could not. It was also easily transported by aircraft and railcar.
