1. 슈발리에[편집]
'슈발리에'는 프랑스어로 '용감한 사람' 또는 '기사'를 의미합니다. 귀족 집안 출신으로 말과 갑옷을 소유할 정도로 부유하며, 자신의 군주에게 충성을 맹세한 기사들이었습니다. 슈발리에 중 가장 낮은 계급은 하급 영주의 아들들로 장남이 아니어서 상속을 받지 못하고 전쟁 중에 재산을 모아야 하는 부류들이었습니다. 슈발리에는 대부분 길고 육중한 창으로 무장하고 쇠사슬 갑옷 등 견고한 갑옷을 착용했습니다. 적의 보병뿐만 아니라 주변의 강한 소작농도 얼마든지 제압할 수 있었습니다.
'Chevalier' is French for 'chivalrous person,' or 'knight.' This would be a member of the nobility wealthy enough to own a horse and armor, sworn to serve his feudal master in battle. The lowest rank of chevalier would be composed of the second sons of lesser lords who were unlikely to inherit property and thus had to seek their fortunes in war. Most chevaliers would be armed with lances or heavy spears and wear chain mail or heavier. They'd be more than a match for any uppity peasants in the neighborhood, not to mention enemy infantry.

Wealthy chevaliers or those favored by their feudal lords would have heavier equipment – plate mail, horse barding, and the like – making them nearly invulnerable while on horseback. These Heavy Chevaliers were often accompanied in battle by squires, who were responsible for dragging them out of combat if they were unhorsed. There was nothing that an infantryman liked to see more than an enemy knight lying stuck in the mud.

Elite Chevalier would be veteran knights, survivors of many battles and the most skilled at the charge. As such they would be held in reserve and used to deliver the death-blow to the enemy. In the Battle of Dyrrhachium, (1081), as their own forces were collapsing on both flanks, a group of Norman knights charged the Byzantine center, breaking the enemy infantry and routing the entire army.

By the 18th century muskets were rendering heavy armor all but useless, and 'Hussar' came to be applied to cavalry armed with sword and lance. Hussars were known to be gallant and impetuous. Napoleon said that he'd be surprised to see a Hussar to live beyond the age of thirty because of their recklessness in battle. They are also credited with the invention of 'sabrage' - the art of opening a champagne bottle with a saber.

The Renault R35 was a French light infantry tank used during World War II. It was well-armored to assist with infantry operations, but only had a 37mm main gun and lacked significant anti-tank weaponry. This gap lead to development of the Renault R40, which had a more powerful long gun.

The SOMUA S35 was a French cavalry tank in World War II. Though it was expensive to produce and required its commander to sit outside the turret, the S35 was nevertheless powerful and well armored. The Germans were able to defeat the French armored forces through better strategy and communications, as opposed to any superiority in design.

The Camouflage du Materiel were a group of French, anti-German engineers who worked on secret military designs in the collaborationist state of Vichy France. Their work stopped when the Germans occupied Vichy France in November 1942, but resumed under the pretense of inventing a tracked snow removal vehicle. After liberation, the French government wanted to restore its prestige and military power and decided to produce a new tank based on their designs. The result was the ARL44. Due to the severe limitations of industry in postwar France, the tank did not enter production until 1949. By then it was outdated, and the French quickly replaced them with American M47 Pattons.

The British Centurion main battle tank that rolled off the line at the end of World War II helped to obsolete the distinction between light, medium, and heavy tanks. Its successor, the Chieftain, was also well received but somewhat lacking in mobility. Having purchased hundreds of Chieftains, the shah of Iran agreed to work with the British on producing a faster version called the Shir. His order was canceled after the Iranian Revolution in 1979, but development went on and resulted four years later in a new tank dubbed the Challenger 1.
Superior horsepower allowed faster movement than the Chieftain despite adding six tons of weight. A secret composite called Chobham armor that it shared with the American M1 Abrams gave excellent protection, and its unusual rifled main gun provided great accuracy at extreme range. These qualities helped avoid any losses during the Gulf War while securing 300 tank kills, including the longest one ever at a distance of nearly 3 miles. Ultimately the UK replaced the Challenger 1 with the all-new Challenger 2 and sold off most of their inventory to Jordan.

Main battle tanks are built for firepower, protection, and mobility. France’s AMX Leclerc excels in all three. The fast acceleration permitted by its light chassis is invaluable in the cover-based style of modern tank warfare. Its low-profile hull is guarded by a combination of traditional, reactive, and composite armors. While some may question the inclusion of a Soviet-style autoloader, its armaments are otherwise on par with contemporary designs. All this quality comes at a high cost that makes the Leclerc the most expensive MBT of its generation.
The model went into production in 1991 and entered service the following year, just missing the Gulf War. France has in fact only deployed its Leclercs on peacekeeping missions in Kosovo and Lebanon. However, the vehicle has seen combat in Yemen under the United Arab Emirates. Reinforced with up-armor kits, they suffered zero total losses and only one crew death. The Leclerc’s steep price tag has kept anyone aside from the wealthy UAE from importing it, but the French fleet is being upgraded as part of the Scorpion modernization program.

Great Britain's main battle tank has been the FV4034 Challenger 2 since roughly 1998. It is equipped with a 120mm L30A1 Tank Gun, the successor to the Challenger 1’s L11 gun. The new cannon has a rifled barrel, similar to most small arms rifles. This type of barrel is beneficial because the British Army uses high explosive squash head rounds, which are intended for ranges up to 8 kilometers.
The Challenger 2 also is also equipped with the L94A1, a 7.62mm chain gun. This weapon is ideal for supportive roles and cover fire for allies arriving on foot. It also excels at suppressing enemy anti-vehicle ground troops.

To keep up with modern warfare’s rapid innovation Germany is developing a new tank, the Panther KF51. This 3 or 4 crew tank began development in 2016, and was publicly unveiled in June 2022. It is armed with both a 130mm smoothbore gun and a remote operated 12.7mm machine gun.
What distinguishes the Panther KF51 from other modern tanks is the pair of rotating drum magazines for its130mm gun. Each drum magazine contains up to 10 rounds of varying ammunition types ranging from armor piercing to airburst. Most impressively, when test-fired in 2022 this system was able to rapidly fire 3 rounds in 16 seconds.
