미국의 어린이 책 작가 도널드 소볼(Donald J. Sobol, 1924.10.4 - 2012.7.11)이 1963년부터 2012년까지 써낸 어린이용 미스터리물. 우리나라에는 1980년대에 메르헨 전집을 통해 알려지게 되면서 지금까지 나오고 있다. 또한 미국에서도 인기가 있어 1978년에는 4컷 만화, 1989년에는 TV 드라마, 2013년에는 영화로 제작되었으며 관련 서적도 풍부하다.

대개 사건은 어린이들 사이에서 일어나는 소소한 사건이거나, 경찰서장을 맡고있는 주인공 브라운의 아버지를 통해 들어오고 그걸 들은 브라운이 해결하는 방식이지만 주 무대인 마을 아이다빌을 거의 안벗어난다.

• 브라운: 이 이야기의 주인공. 아직 10대지만 책을 많이 읽어서 사는 마을인 아이다빌 내에서도 유명해 붙은 별명이 "백과사전". 집 차고에 "사건당 25센트 - 사건에 따라 추가비용 있음"라는 팻말을 걸고 사무소를 운영한다.

• 브라운 서장: 브라운의 아버지, 아이다빌 경찰서장
• 브라운 부인: 브라운의 어머니
• 샐리 킴볼: 12살, 처음 등장했을 때, 아이다빌의 남자아이들이 꼼짝 못할 정도로 완력이 강했고, 브라운에게 문제를 내서 도전했지만 그걸 브라운이 맞춘 이후 서로 죽이 맞는 친구이자 동업자, 보디가드가 된다. 주로 왓슨역이지만 가끔 브라운을 대신해 문제를 해결한 적도 있다.
• 타이거즈: 요즘 말로 스위니의 자동차샵을 근거지로 하는 아이다빌의 일진. 스스로를 포장하는 말로 "산악인"이라고 하지만 하는 꼴을 보면 일진이다. 대장은 벅스 미니로 브라운에게 이런저런 난제를 들고오지만 번번히 패배한다.
• 윌포드 위긴스: 고교 중퇴에 항상 아이다빌의 아이들에게 "일확천금" 사기를 걸으려고 하는 친구지만 브라운 일행에게 번번히 패한다.
