2.2. 형을 죽이는 패륜을 저지르고 본인도 죽다
중국 춘추시대 위(衛)나라의 14대
군주.
위장공의 아들.
위환공의 이복 동생. 위 환공이 자신의 직위를 박탈한 것에 앙심을 품고 16년 동안 힘을 기르다가 위 환공을 살해하는 데 성공했으나 그는
진환공(陳桓公)과 대부
석작(石碏)에게 죽었고 아우인 공자 진(晉)이 뒤를 이으니 그가 바로
위선공(衛宣公)이다.
그는 위 장공의 애첩의 소생이다. 그 탓인지 모자가 총애를 받은걸로도 모자라 주우가 자라서 군사를 좋아하였으므로
[1] 병사를 아끼고 사랑한 것이 아니라 군무를 좋아했다는 의미다.
위 장공은 그것이 기특하고 대견했는지 그를 장수로 임명했다.
[2] 위 장공이 그리 생각할만한게, 당시는 전란이 하루가 멀다하고 일어나는 시기임을 감안해야 한다. 제후국들도 제후국들이지만, 이민족도 마찬가지.
그러자 상경인 석작이 간했다.
"아드님이 군사를 좋아한다고 일을 맡기지 마십시오. 그는 교만하고 사치하여, 그 일을 감당할 수 없고, 그것이 훗날의 화근이 됩니다."
그러나 위 장공이 그것을 쿨하게 씹었다. 그런데 주우는 석작의 아들인 석후(石厚)와 친하게 지냈는데, 석작이 석후를 꾸짖었으나 석후는 듣지 않았다.
세월이 흘러 위 장공은 23년 동안 나라를 다스리고 죽어 세자인 완이 즉위하니 그가 바로 위 환공이다.
위 환공 2년(기원전 733년), 위 환공은 주우가 석작의 말대로 교만하여 횡포를 부리고 사치를 저지르자 위 환공은 그를 장군직에서 해임했다. 이에 주우는 나라를 떠나 망명했다.
[3] 어디로 망명했는지는 아쉽게도 기록이 남아있지 않다. 다만 후일의 기록을 보면 위(衛)나라의 외진 곳에 숨거나 위(衛)나라의 속국으로 숨은 것으로 보인다.

위 환공 13년(기원전 722년),
정나라의 군주
정장공의 동생인 공숙 단이 망명을 왔을 때 그와 친하게 지냈다.
위 환공 16년(기원전 719년), 2월 무신일 주우가 위 환공을 습격해 그를 살해하고 위후가 된다. 주우는 공숙 단을 시켜 정나라를 치게 하고
송(宋)나라,
진(陳)나라,
채나라에게 구원을 요청했다. 그리고 정나라의 도성 신정의 동문을 쳤으나 이득을 얻지 못하고 달아나게 되었다.
주우는 위 환공을 죽여 민심을 잃었다. 석작은 일단 위군 주우가 돌아왔을 때 그와 잘 지내는 척했다. 그러나 석작은 대규를 통해 진 환공과 비밀리에 연결하고 있었다. 9월 진후와 짜고 북 땅에서 우재 추와 함께 위군 주우를 죽이고, 위 환공의 아우 공자 진(晉)을 세우니
[4] 이때 석작은 주우의 최측근이었던 아들 석후(石厚)까지 죽게끔 만들었는데 여기서 큰 일을 할 때에는 혈육의 사사로운 정을 무시한다는 뜻의 대의멸친이라는 말이 유래했다.
그가 바로 위 선공이다.
