식스틴 톤스는 1946년 녹음하고 1947년 멀 트래비스가 발표한 노래로 켄터키 주 광부들의 애환을 노래하는 포크송이다.

1955년 테네시 어니 포드가 커버한 버전이 대박이 나서 멀 트래비스 원곡보다 이 버전이 더 유명해졌다.

이후 큰 인기를 끌어 테네시 어니 포드의 버전은 빌보드 컨트리 차트 10주동안 1위에 있었고 이후 팝 차트 8주동안 1위에 있었다. 영국 싱글 차트에서 4주동안 1위에 있었다. 또한 수 많은 가수들이 커버곡을 냈다.

가장 유명한 버전이며 테네시 어니 포드의 묵직한 바리톤에 손가락을 튕기며 클라리넷이 추가된 팝으로 편곡한 이 곡은 가사의 다크 휴머스러함을 배가시켜 큰 인기를 끌었다. You load 16 tons, what do you get? Another day older and deeper in debt, I owe my soul to the company store 을 보듯이 회사에 묶여 16톤씩 석탄을 캐지만 빚은 더 커지는 뼈빠지게 고생하는 광부들의 애환이 더 강조되고 컨트리곡과 전통 팝 부분에서 중요한 곡으로 평가되고 있다. 2015년 미국 의회의 국립 녹음 등록소에 등록됐다. 사우스파크 시즌 22 에피소드 Unfulfilled 에 아마존닷컴 파업사태와 무노조 경영, 직원들을 로봇처럼 다루는 행태를 비판하는 에피소드가 있었다. 이 때 버터스의 아버지 스티븐이 아마존에서 일하면서 이 노래를 배경음악으로 썼는데 아마존에서 수십톤 배송물을 나르는 반복적인 일상이 옛날 광부들의 애환과 비슷하다는 느낌이 들어 명배경음악이라는 평가가 많았다.영상
