고등학교 졸업식이 끝나는 날 친구와 함께 학교 옆 주차장에서 담배를 태웠습니다. 무엇이든지 할 수 있다는 해방감과 정작 뭘 해야할지 모르겠는 불안감이 교차했습니다.

혁오의 청춘 기록은 '비틀비틀' 걸어가거나 '와리가리'하거나 '찬란한 빛에 눈이 멀어 꺼져'가기 일쑤였다. 나른한 기타 리프와 함께 주차장 뒤편에서 담뱃불을 빌리는 톱 트랙 'Graduation'의 초반부도 역시 그렇다. 그런데 이들은 금세 방향대를 꺾더니, 형형색색 신디사이저와 짙은 노이즈로 만든 타임머신을 타고 종점 없는 신세계를 향해 날아간다. '진정한 사랑과 행복을 찾아서'라는 작별 인사를 남긴 채.
밴드는 과도한 미디어 집중을 감내했던 지난날을 졸업하려 한다. 쓸쓸한 일상 속에서 기어이 '소확행(작지만 확실한 행복)'을 찾아내는 'Graduation'부터가 그렇고 '천 마디 말보다 사랑한다 말할래'라 노래하는 'Love ya!'는 그 결정타다. '위잉위잉'의 까칠한 기타 톤은 부드럽게 연성화됐고, 노래를 보조하는 거친 리프는 오히려 사랑을 축복하는 폭죽 소리처럼 들린다. 'Tomboy'의 메이저 코드가 음울을 위한 역설적 장치였다면 'Love ya!'의 멜로디는 환희 혹은 기쁨 자체다.
젊음의 방황은 계속되지만 이제는 낭만적인 '방랑'이 더 적합하다. 홍콩의 택시 기사에게 자꾸만 돌아오지 않을 질문을 던지는 'Citizen kane'은 분명 외로운 곡이나, 이국의 멜로디와 함께 격정적으로 질주하는 밴드는 거의 처음 선보이는 활력을 과시한다. 어쿠스틱 기타와 오리엔탈 기타 리프로 꾸민 'Gang gang schiele' 같은 과거의 유산 위에서 평화를 노래하고, 장엄한 피아노와 코러스로 출발해 스매싱 펌킨스 스타일의 록 트랙으로 연결되는 'Goodbye seoul'로 새로운 모델을 제시한다. 허무를 노래하면서도 어딘가 갇혀있다는 느낌이 들었던 전작에 비해 여유가 생겼다.
이처럼 < 24 >는 한결 가볍기에 신선하다. 그 산뜻함은 '진정한 사랑과 행복'이라 쓰고 '자유에의 갈망'이라 읽어도 될 부제로 테마화 된다. 오혁의 나이가 곧 앨범 타이틀이던 그들의 음악은 낯선 어른의 세상에 던져진 '젊은 우리'의 공허를 대변했고 좀체 뭐가 정답인지 알 수 없는 세상을 부유했으나, 언젠가부터 그런 것들이 '힙스터'라 명명되며 자연스러웠던 감정과 표현의 틀을 강제한 면이 없지 않다.
오혁은 아이즈(ize)와의 인터뷰에서 '< 23 >으로 마침표를 찍고 넘어가기로 했다'라며 새 앨범을 소개한 바 있다. 1분짜리 '하늘나라'를 제외하면 다섯 곡뿐인 플레이타임과 한글 가사의 부재는 아쉬운 부분이나 더 넓은 스펙트럼을 위한 도약 단계로는 훌륭한 작품이다. 빈티지스러운 새것을 만들어내는 작법은 제법 노련하며 일관된 메시지도 있다. 꾸준히 자신들의 이야기를 담아온 밴드는 스물둘, 스물셋의 시선을 넘어 새로운 스물넷의 눈으로 세상을 본다. '힙'은 진솔함에 따라오는 수식어일 뿐.
- 2020 사랑으로 전국 콘서트에서는 LOVE YA!를 임현제와 함께 어쿠스틱 듀엣버전으로 편곡해서 불렀다.
