신스팝 음악이다. 1984년에 발매되었다. 1984년 12월 빌보드 핫 댄스 클럽 플레이에 1위에 올랐으며 여러 유럽 국가의 음악 차트 상위권에도 올랐다.
노래제목인 'Big in Japan'은 북미나 유럽 등의 서구권 출신 아티스트이나, 본고장인 서구권 시장에는 인지도가 없으면서
일본에서만 유명한 아티스트를 뜻하는 속어이다. 동명의 영국 밴드에서 따온 제목이라고 한다.
가사의 내용은
베를린 동물원역의 마약중독자들과 마약이 없는곳에서 성공해서 잘나가고 싶다는 환상을 가진 연인들에 대한 이야기를 담고 있다.
