앨런 멩컨이 작곡,
스티븐 슈왈츠가 작사히였고,
포카혼타스 역의 주디 쿤과
존 스미스 역의
멜 깁슨이 노래를 불렀다.
작중
코코움이
토마스의 총에 사망하고 토마스 대신
존 스미스가 원주민에게 잡혀와 갇히자 포카혼타스가 감옥에 몰래 들어와 서로를 만나지 않았다면 삶의 의미가 없었을 것이라며 이야기하는 노래이다.
노래가 완성된 뒤 담당 배우들의 목소리로 녹음이 완료되었고 애니메이팅도 90% 완료된 상태였으나 테스트 스크리닝에서 아동 관객들이 이 부분에서 지루함을 느끼고 극의 전개가 느려진다는 평가
[1] 약간 복잡하게 말하자면, 디즈니 애니메이션의 불문율 중에는 "(미녀와 야수(애니메이션)의 The Mob Song이나 포카혼타스의 Savages와 같은, 최종적인 떠들썩한 난투극을 향해 전진하는 두드려대는 행진곡을 제외한다면 )스토리가 결말을 향해 치달을수록, 특히 이 If I Never Knew You와 같이 서정적인 형태의 뮤직넘버를 삽입해서는 안 된다"는 규정이 있었다고 한다. 정확히는 관계자들이 이 노래가 너무나도 감미롭기 때문에 불문율대로 이 노래를 숙청해야 할지 (약간의 텐션 저하를 감수하고) 살려둬야 할지 극심한 내적갈등을 겪다가 앨런 멩컨이 이 노래를 숙청해야 하겠다라고 결정을 내려서 안도했다고.
때문에 삭제되었다. 그 흔적으로
포카혼타스와 존 스미스의 애틋한 감정이 흐르는 장면들에서 배경 음악에 If I Never Knew You의 테마가 흐르는 것을 들을 수 있다. 팝 버전을 부른 존 세카다와
샤니스의 버전은 삭제되지 않고 엔드 크레딧에 등장하며 사운드트랙에도 수록되었다.
[2] 당시 발매된 우리말 음반에선 따로 한국 가수가 부르지 않았지만 제목이 <차라리 만나지 않았더라면>로 되어있다.
이후 2005년에 포카혼타스의 10주년 에디션을 발매하며 완전히 애니메이팅을 완료한 버전이 작중에 추가되었고
[3] 또한 영화의 엔딩에 포카혼타스와 존 스미스가 헤어지기 전 한 번 더 짧게 부른다.
