Achtung Baby와 함께
U2 최고의 명반으로 평가받고 있는 앨범이다.
종교적 분위기에 심오한 내용을 담고 있다. 앨범 자체가 유기적으로 구성된
컨셉트 앨범의 성격이 강하다. 하지만 역시 U2답게 이곡도 사회고발적인 내용과 영국의
북아일랜드 탄압에 대한 저항의 메세지를 담은 곡들도 수록되어있다. 미국의 남미에 대한 강제적인 무기판매를 비판하는 노래인 Bullet the Blue Sky와 '신의 나라'이지만 그 이면은 온갖 탄압과 착취와 통제로 가득한 미국 사회를 비판한 In God's Country가 사회고발을 하는 대표적인 곡. 이런 반미적인 성향 덕분에 한국에 처음 수입됐을 때는 Bullet the Blue Sky, Running to Stand Still, Red Hill Mining Town, In God's Country 네 곡이 검열되기도 했다. 한편, Mothers of the Disappeared 또한 아르헨티나의 군사독재에 저항하다 숨진 젊은이들을 기리는 노래다. Red Hill Mining Town은 영연방 내 탄광근무자들의 애환을 썼다. 보통 수록곡 중에 4곡이 금지곡이 되면 국내정발이 안 되는 상황인데 판1면에 3곡 2면에 4곡이란 비율이 맞춰지면서 발매되었다.
이전의
포스트 펑크 사운드에 가스펠, 컨트리, 앰비언트, 사이키델릭, 일렉트로니카, 블루스 등이 결합된 U2 하면 떠오르는 영롱한 사운드를 이전보다 완전체격으로 확실히 구현한 앨범이다. 그 자신도 유명한
앰비언트계 일렉트로닉 키보드 연주자이자 음악가로 유명한
브라이언 이노가 음반을 제작해서, 모든 곡들의 음이 참 신비롭고
엣지의 짤캉거리는 기타음이 아주 잘잡혔다.
여담으로 이 앨범에서 4곡이 싱글 커트되었는데 2번 트랙과 3번 트랙이 빌보드 싱글차트 1위를 했고 1번트랙은 13위를 했으며 7번 트랙은 44위를 했다.
앨범의 제목 때문에 기독교계에서도 메시지에 주목한 앨범이기도 하다. 성결대 윤영훈 교수는 이름에 따라 부여된 불평등이 철폐된 세상이 U2가 바랐던 하나님 나라였다며 이 앨범을 높이 평가했다.
링크위의 흔히 알려진 앨범 커버는 LP 커버 및 20주년 기념반의 모습으로 1987년 당시 발매된 CD 버전과는 차이가 있다.
[1] 네덜란드의 사진작가인 안톤 코빈이 "Zabriskie Point"라는 장소에서 촬영하였다. 그 외에도 음반 부클릿에 삽입된 여호수아 나무는 모하비 사막에서 촬영되었다.

포스트 펑크가 결합된 모던 록 사운드, 그리고
아일랜드에서 바라본 시각 등의 새로운 방법론으로 다시 지펴올렸다는 평을 받는 불후의 명반이다.
90년대 얼터너티브열풍이 본격화 되기 전에 헤비메탈의 대안이 어떤 것인지 제시한 앨범으로 U2가 얼터너티브의 시발점이란 평이 이 앨범에서 비롯된다. 이런 상황적 배경으로 인해 당시 U2의 위상은 팝의 황제 마이클 잭슨을 넘볼 상태에 올랐었다 해도 과언이 아니었다.[3] 당시 마이클 잭슨은 Thriller 이후로 정규앨범을 내지 않았던 상태였고 We Are The World 이후로 Captain EO를 제외한 눈에 띄는 활동을 하지 않았었다. 물론 The Joshua Tree가 발매되었던 해에 Bad를 발매하여 최고의 아티스트임을 증명하였지만.

4.2.1. Red Hill Mining Town[편집]
- 마거릿 대처가 펼친 채산성이 떨어지는 광산을 전부 정리하는 정책에 반대하며 1984년 영국에서 일어난 광산노동자들의 총파업을 보고 쓴 곡이다. Red Hill Town이라는 가상의 광산촌에서 광산이 폐광되며 일어나는 비극을 그려내며 대처와 영국석탄청을 비판하고 있으며 정치색이 가장 노골적인 곡 중 하나이다.
