벨벳 언더그라운드의 데뷔 앨범.
1964년 레코드사에서 작곡가로 일하던
루 리드와 사무적인 이유로 만나게 된
존 케일은 밴드를 결성하게 되었으며, 이후 기타리스트 스털링 모리슨과 드러머 앵거스 맥리스를 영입하였지만 얼마 지나지 않아 맥리스가 탈퇴하자
[1] 아이러니하게도 벨벳 언더그라운드라는 밴드의 이름을 다름아닌 맥리스가 지었다.
모리슨이 맥리스를 대신하여 친구였던 짐 터커의 여동생인
모린 터커를 영입하여 밴드의 라인업을 완성하였다.
이들의 음악을 눈여겨 본 팝 아트 미술가
앤디 워홀이 밴드의 후원자로서 여러가지 지원을 해주기로 결정하였으며, 앤디 워홀은 독일의 모델 출신 가수
니코를 데려와 보컬로 참가시키고 앨범과 수록곡들의 제작에 이런저런 조언과 아이디어를 제안하기도 하였다. 비록 앤디 워홀이 전통적인 음악가는 아니었지만 그의 뛰어난 감각은 이 앨범에 예술성을 크게 더해주는 결과를 낳았으며, 이에 감명받는
벨벳 언더그라운드 멤버들은
앤디 워홀이 사람들이 흔히 떠올리는 개념의 음악 프로듀싱을 하지 않았음에도
앤디 워홀의 이름을 프로듀서 크레딧에 삽입하였다.

BDSM 등을 주제로 한, 당시로서는 볼 수 없었던 어찌보면 변태적이기까지 한 가사가 합쳐져 매우 혁신적인 음악을 보여주었다. 음악 자체는 사이키델릭 록의 한 범주로 볼 수 있지만 흔히 사이키델릭 록하면 바로 떠오르는,
히피스러운 분위기 속에서 마약 복용 이후의 상태를 몽환적이고 환상적인 느낌의 음악으로 표현하는 것과는 궤를 달리하는 앨범으로, 미니멀리즘스러운 단순하고 강박적인 코드 진행 아래에 마약 복용 이후의 느낌을 담담하고 허무하게 표현하고 있으며 거기에
프리 재즈에서 영향을 받은 즉흥 연주에 거친 기타 피드백과 노이즈 사운드를 적극적으로 더하여 아방가르드적인 느낌을 더한다.
지극히 전위적이었던 이 앨범은 특유의 가사 때문에 라디오 방송에서도 거의 흘러나오지 않고 평론가들과 대중들에게 외면받아 발매 이후
빌보드 200에서 겨우 171위에 오르고 5년이 지나도 3만 여장 밖에 팔리지 않는 대 실패를 하였지만
[2] 발매 이후 꼬박 10년 정도가 지나야 10만 장을 넘겼다고 한다.
현재는 크게 재평가를 받아 대중음악 역사상 손꼽히는 명작으로 평가받는다.
지나치게 실험적인 음악만 추구하였거나 혹은
비교적 대중성에 치중한 이후의 앨범들과는 달리 "
Sunday Morning", "
I'm Waiting for the Man" 등 대중적인 노래들과 "
Heroin", "European Son" 등 전위적인 노래들이 적절히 조화를 이룬 앨범이기도 하다.

커버가 워낙 유명해 '
바나나 앨범'이라고 부르는 사람들도 있다. 앨범 커버 디자인은
팝 아트의 창시자로 유명한
앤디 워홀의 아이디어였으며

, 앤디 워홀은 이 앨범의 프로듀싱도 담당했다.
[5] 앤디가 통상적인 의미의 음악 프로듀싱을 한 것은 아니지만, 1집의 모든 면에 관여하고 참신한 아이디어를 제시하여 반영시키는 등 앨범 제작에 큰 영향력을 행사했기 때문에 프로듀서라는 크레딧을 받게 된 것. 실질적인 음악 프로듀싱은 톰 윌슨이 담당했다.
니코와의 협연을 주선한 사람도 앤디 워홀. 이 앨범 커버는 단연 대중음악 역사상 가장 위대한 앨범 커버 중 하나로 꼽히며, 앨범이 발매된지 오래된 현재까지도
비틀즈의
Abbey Road와 함께 앨범 커버 순위 1, 2위를 다투고 있다.
LP 발표 당시에는 바나나 껍질을 벗길 수 있게 스티커 형태로 되어 있었는데
[6] 위 앨범 커버를 자세히 보면 "Peel slowly and see(천천히 껍질을 벗기고 보라)"라는 글자가 들어가 있다.
그런데 당시에는 붙였다 다시 떼거나 스티커를 라미네이트 하여 장기간 보존할 수 있는 기술력이 부족해 그냥 접착제가 발린 바나나 껍질 모양 스티커를 그 위에 붙여 당시 음반을 구입한 몇몇 사람들은 이를 떼다 실수로 찢기도 하였다. 중고로 거래되는 매물 중 상당수가 바나나 스티커가 찢어진 채 판매되고 있었고, 몇몇 매물은 속살을 보기 위해 스티커 의 한쪽 면을 잡고 떼다 찢어지니, 반대쪽 면을 잡고 떼다 또 찢어져(...) 결국 스티커를 떼지 못한 채 그대로 판매하는 경우도 있었다고 한다.
속살이 분홍색이어서 남성의
성기를 상징하는거라는 추측도 있었다고. 그러나 정작 앤디 워홀은 이 앨범이 발매된 뒤 벨벳에 흥미를 잃어 앨범 제작에서 손을 뗐다.
[8] 다만 루 리드가 벨벳 시절에 작곡하고 솔로 앨범 'Transformer'에 실은 곡인 Andy's Chest 같은 몇 곡을 보면 그 후에도 어느 정도의 교류는 계속 했었던 것 같다.
참고로 박스세트로 재발매된 바나나 커버도 스티커로 된 껍질을 재연하여 벗길수 있게 만들었는데,
[9] 전술한 당시의 저질 스티커 보다 잘 찢어지지도 않고 코팅도 잘 되어 있다. 무엇보다도 다시 붙일수 있다.
벗기면 마약이 나온다는 헛소문이 돌기도 했다.
[10] 물론 떠도는 이야기에 불과하지만 바나나 껍질을 벗길수 있는 커버인건 사실이다. 아마 몇몇 인간들이 여기다 실제로 마약을 숨겨 암거래했을거 같긴 하다.

이 앨범의 음악적 평가는 이미 전설이 된지 오래. 로파이에 거친 기타 연주, 중성적인 목소리를 가진
니코의 감정이 배제된 건조한 목소리, 퇴폐적이고 변태적이며 침울한 가사들로 이루어져 있는데, 예를들어 'Heroin', 'I'm Waitng for the Man' 등은 모두
마약 관련 곡이며, 'Venus in Furs'는 대중음악 사상 처음으로
SM 변태성욕을 다룬 곡이기도 하다. 일각에서는 이러한 벨벳 언더그라운드의 음악을 당시 유행하던 사랑과 평화를 노래하던
히피들을 냉소하며 어두운 감성을 보여준, 히피즘이 꽃피던 해에 발매된
미니멀리즘 음악의 위대한 신호탄으로 평가하기도 한다. 쉽게 말하자면
서부 히피즘의 대척점에 있는 동부 뉴욕의 위대한 밴드라는 것.
이런 파격적인 가사의 곡들은 당시엔 라디오 방송을 타는 것도 거의 불가능해서 레코드사 간부진이 이 앨범은 대중성이 전혀 없다고 판단하여 사실상 서포트를 아예 포기해버려서
[11] 사실 이전에 본작 못지 않게 대중성이 떨어지는 프랭크 자파의 밴드 '마더즈 오브 인벤션'의 데뷔앨범을 발매한 탓도 있었다. 더 가관인 것은 마더즈의 데뷔앨범과 본 앨범의 녹음은 거의 비슷한 시기에 이뤄졌는 데, 본 앨범은 마더즈 데뷔 앨범 발매와 겹치지 않게 하기 위해 뒤 몇 달 묵힌 뒤에서야 발매되었다. 이런 레코드 사의 농간(?) 때문에 루 리드와 프랭크 자파는 한쪽이 죽을 때까지 서로 물어뜯는 앙숙이 되어버렸다. 그러나 자파가 사망한 후 로큰롤 명예의 전당에 프랭크 자파에 헌액될 때 루 리드가 소개자로 나와서 모두를 놀라게 했다. 양자 지인들의 권유로 화해의 의미에서 그렇게 했다고 한다.
일선 레코드점에 배급조차 거의 안됐다고 한다. 그래서 당대엔 거의 팔리지 않았으나, 70년대 이후

인디 음악이 본격적으로 등장하면서 재평가, 재주목받기 시작했다.

이러한 부분들이 고평가를 받아 현재는 단연 벨벳 언더그라운드의 앨범 중에서 가장 높은 평가를 받는 앨범이자

- 루 리드의 대학 시절 스승이었던 시인 델모어 슈워츠 헌정곡. 그러나 정작 슈워츠는 록 음악의 가사를 매우 경멸했다고 한다. 그럼에도 불구하고 리드가 밝힌 헌정의 이유는 가사가 짧아서라고(...). 슈워츠는 본 앨범이 발매된 3개월 뒤에 사망한다.
