엘튼 존의 컴필레이션 앨범이며, 1965년부터 1990년까지 25년간 발매된 곡들이 수록된 4CD 박스 세트이다.

2. 구성[편집]

잘 알려진 히트곡들을 포함하여 싱글로 발매되지 않거나 잘 알려지지 않은 곡들, 라이브 실황, 데모 등 다양한 곡들이 수록되었다. 라이너 노트에는 엘튼 존과 버니 토핀의 1990년 인터뷰를 포함하여 모든 수록곡들의 녹음 일자 정보도 빼곡히 담았지만, 대부분의 녹음 일자는 잘못 표기되었다.[1] 1991년 영국반에는 수정되었다.

수록곡들 중에서 1970년 곡 Sixty Years On은 기존의 원곡이 아니라 관현악 도입부를 확장한 음원이 대신 수록되었다.[2] 엘튼 존과 버니 토핀이 쓴 1990년 곡들 You Gotta Love Someone, Easier to Walk Away, Made for Me, I Swear I Heard the Night Talkin' 가운데 "You Gotta Love Someone"과 "Easier to Walk Away"는 이 박스 세트보다 1개월 앞서 (미국과 캐나다를 제외한 국가들) 발매된 컴필레이션 앨범 The Very Best of Elton John에 먼저 수록되었다.[3]

영국에서는 1991년 11월 발매되었고 그해 7월 녹음된 곡들이자 버니 토핀과 함께 쓴 Understanding Women, Suit of Wolves가 "You Gotta Love Someone"과 "I Swear I Heard the Night Talkin'" 대신 수록되었다.[4] "Understanding Women"은 1992년 정규 24집 The One에 수록되었고, "Suit of Wolves"는 《The One》의 리드 싱글 "The One" B면과 《The One》의 1999년 리마스터반에 보너스 트랙으로 수록되었다.[5] 영국반에는 아트 디렉터 데이비드 코스타가 제작한 1970년대 초반부터 1980년대 후반까지의 다양한 엘튼 존 모습을 담은 미국반 표지 대신, 사진가 유르겐 텔러가 1991년 촬영한 엘튼 존 사진으로 대체되었다.[6][7]

이 박스 세트가 발매되었을 당시 엘튼 존은 6주간 재활 치료를 받으면서 십수 년간 이어졌던 약물과 알코올 등 복합적인 중독에서 벗어난 상태였다. 그래서 엘튼 존은 자신의 옛날 삶은 이 앨범의 발매와 함께 멈추었다는 말을 박스 세트 라이너 노트에 표기하기도 했다.[8] 《To Be Continued...》라는 제목이 마음에 들고 희망적이면서도 선견지명처럼 보인다고 밝혔다. 하지만 1970년대와 1980년대의 오래된 사진들을 모아놓은 표지보다 새 사진을 표지로 사용하고 싶었다고 밝혔다.[9]

미국 빌보드 200에서 84위를 기록했고, 캐나다 RPM 앨범 차트에서는 21위를 기록했다. RIAA 기준으로 미국에서 200만 장 이상의 판매고를 올리며 더블 플래티넘을 인증을 받았고, MC(뮤직 캐나다) 기준으로 캐나다에서 5만 장 이상의 판매고를 올리며 골드 인증을 받았다.[10] 영국에서는 차트 진입에 실패했다.
