Founded twice in the 16th century - the first settlement there was destroyed by indigenous peoples - Buenos Aires developed into a modest trading port under Spanish rule. Initially part of the Viceroyalty of Peru, it became the capital of the new Viceroyalty of Rio de La Plata in 1776. The main export of the viceroyalty was cattle products, especially leather. The lifestyle of the gauchos, the cowboys who tended herds on the vast plain called the pampas, left an indelible mark on Argentine culture as seen in Jose Hernandez’s national epic, Martin Fierro.

Following independence in 1816, tensions mounted between the wealthy capital and the provinces. Buenos Aires only managed to establish permanent centralized control over the interior in the late 19th century. Starting from the early 1900s, the city has been a fashionable global hub for culture and commerce. It is notably the home of the tango as well as the writer Jorge Luis Borges, a seminal figure in modern Latin American literature.
