카녜 웨스트의 싱글이며 그의 데뷔 앨범 The College Dropout의 첫 싱글로 2003년 9월 30일에 발매되었다.

Well, the only thing this accident's is saying is, "I am about to hand you the world, just know at any given time I can take it away from you." To nearly lose your life, to nearly lose your mouth, your voice, your whole face, as a rapper...and I had to be on TV! My face looks crazy to me now... But I have to just thank God for the situation that I am in... "Through The Wire" is the worst thing that could've possibly happen to me, and now it's obviously the best thing. Look how it exploded!

칸예 웨스트의 래퍼로써의 데뷔곡으로, 샤카 칸의 Through The Fire를 샘플링 한 곡이다.[1] 칸예가 교통사고로 인해 턱이 부서진 경험에서 얻은 생각들이 담겨 있는 트랙이다. 가사를 보면 교통사고를 당해 턱뼈가 작살난 본인의 얼굴을 에밋 틸, 펩시 광고를 찍던 중 화상을 당한 마이클 잭슨, 바닐라 스카이에서 톰 크루즈가 맡은 배역 데이비드 에임스에 비유하는 재치를 엿볼 수 있다.

또한 칸예가 본격적인 래퍼로서의 길을 걸을 수 있게 해준 싱글이기도 하다. 칸예를 래퍼가 아니라 프로듀서로만 보던 Roc-A-Fella Records에서는 칸예의 1집을 쉽게 발매해주려 하지 않았는데, 칸예는 자신의 사비를 투자하여 Through The Wire의 뮤직비디오를 만들고 싱글발매를 강행하여 대중적인 성공을 거두었고 Roc-A-Fella Records는 본 곡의 성공 이후 본격적으로 칸예의 1집 발매를 지원해주게 된다.

2002년 교통사고를 당했을 당시 만든 트랙에서는 수술로 인해서 발음이 부정확하다.

칸예의 데뷔곡이자 샘플링 기법을 대표하는 곡 중 하나로, 초창기 칸예 특유의 하이피치 샘플링 기법이 아주 잘 드러나있다. 또한, 가사 역시 스토리텔링 형식을 유지하면서 굉장히 재치있는 비유가 많이 사용되었기에 리스너들에게 큰 인상을 준다.

이러한 점 때문인지 발매 20년이 다 되어가는 현재까지 칸예 웨스트의 명곡을 논할 때 한 자리를 차지하는 곡이다.
