맥도널 더글러스 F/A-18 호넷은 1983년에 사용되기 시작하면서 미군의 최초의 공식 공격 전투기가 되었습니다. 전투기와 공격기 역할을 모두 다하는 F/A-18 호넷은 공중에서 혹은 지상에서 목표물을 명중할 수 있습니다. 사막의 폭풍 작전의 첫 날에 F/A-18 호넷의 다용성이 널리 입증되었습니다. 이라크 전투기가 침입했다는 소식을 들은 폭격에 나선 호켓 비행대대는 공대공 모드로 전환해 적기를 소탕한 후 성공적으로 미션을 완료했습니다.

When the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet entered service in 1983, it became the U.S. military’s first official strike fighter. This indicated that it fulfilled both fighter and attack-aircraft roles per its ‘F/A’ designation, able to hit targets in the air or on the ground. Its versatility was famously proven on the first day of Operation Desert Storm. When a Hornet squadron on a bombing run received word that Iraqi fighters were inbound, they switched into air-to-air mode, downed the enemy bandits, then successfully completed their mission.
Following a somewhat troubled development cycle, the initial F/A-18 model was considered almost the ideal strike fighter among its operators in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. Later variants improved on its only real weakness, limited operational range. Digital ‘fly-by-wire’ controls and a heads-up display made the Hornet notably easier to fly than earlier aircraft. Around 1,500 have been produced for America and her allies. The Navy finally retired their Hornets in 2018, to be replaced by next-gen “Super Hornets,” but the Marines intend to keep theirs in service until the 2030s.
