The P-51C Mustang was an American-made fighter-bomber designed for interception and escort in WWII. With its supercharged Merlin engine, laminar flow wing design, and complement of four .50 caliber machine guns, the P-51C dominated the skies. The Tuskegee Airmen, the first African-American military aviators in U.S. history, added to the Mustang’s legacy with their exemplary service.

Despite facing prejudice at home and abroad, these pilots of the 332nd Fighter Group and 477th Bombardment Group earned numerous awards, including the Distinguished Flying Cross. For example, they lost only 27 bombers in the skies over Italy and Germany, compared to the average 46 for all P-51 escort squadrons. They could be recognized by the distinctive red paint coating the noses and rudders of their aircraft, hence the moniker 'Red Tails'. The remarkable success of the Tuskegee Airmen assisted with the desegregation of the U.S. military by President Truman in 1948.
