Arca는 2012년 Stretch 1, Stretch 2 EP를 발매하였고 이를 계기로 점차 주목받아 Kanye West의 Yeezus에 참여하게 된다. 또한 2013년 발매한 믹스테잎 &&&&&로 좋은 평가를 받았으며 FKA Twigs, 비요크와 작업하기도 하였다. 2014년 Arca는 Mute Records와 계약하고 Xen의 리드 싱글인 'Thievery'를 발매한다.

'Xen'이라는 이름은 Arca의 얼터 에고로, 뮤직비디오에 등장하는 벌거벗은 존재가 이것이라고 한다. 'her'이라고 표현하고 있지만 성별은 없다고 한다.

Whenever I made something that I was really happy with, the first or second time I listened back to it, it would almost be as if someone else made it. And in that state I would always feel connected to my childhood self again, and I would feel a lot softer and more feminine. Xen is not really a boy and it’s not really a girl, and her mere existence is kind of repulsive and attractive at once, and so I imagine her under a spotlight, in this room full of people just staring, wide-eyed, openmouthed.#

Those were all projections of my psyche; of how I viewed my own sexuality and how I engaged with people through the lens of sensuality. They were very important cues, and he took them up. What excited him most was that image of her, of it, and I can’t imagine him representing her in a more accurate way. This being is actually aware of its sex as a weapon and as a threat. Xen is an 'it'. I lean towards calling Xen 'her' in response to the fact that society historically leans towards men having more power. Me calling Xen 'her' is an equalisation of that.#

메타크리틱에서 79점을 기록하면서 좋은 평가를 받았다. 피치포크에서는 "그의 훌륭한 데뷔 앨범 Xen은 끈질기게 실험적이며, 아마도 그가 만든 가장 이상한 음악일 것이다.[1]"고 표현하며 Best New Music을 부여했다. 올뮤직 또한 별 4개를 주며 호평했다.

• 7번 트랙 'Failed'는 당시 그의 남자친구였던 사진작가 Daniel Sannwald에 대한 사랑 노래로, 짧은 별거 기간 동안 쓰여졌다고 한다.
