미국의 턴테이블리즘 DJ인 DJ Shadow의 데뷔 앨범.

2 . 발매 과정[편집]

DJ Shadow는 이전부터 퍼블릭 에너미 등의 거물 힙합 아티스트들과 작업하며 내공을 쌓았으며, Lost and Found (S.F.L.), What Does Your Soul Look Like 등의 싱글을 냈다.[1]

본격적인 앨범 작업은 발매 2년 전인 1994년부터 시작했다. 앨범 작업을 위해 하루에도 몇 시간씩 LP 매장들을 뒤지며 샘플링할 곡을 찾아다녔다. DJ Shadow는 평소에도 LP 문화에 대한 존경을 드러내고 다니며, 앨범 커버도 LP 매장에서 음반을 고르는 사람의 모습을 담고 있다. 여담으로 앨범 커버에 나온 사람들은 DJ Shadow의 실제 친구들이라고 한다.

1990년대와 힙합 역사의 대표적인 명반 중 하나. 역대 최초로 샘플링 작법으로만 작곡된 앨범이다. 실제로 기네스북이 선정한 '최초로 샘플로만 만들어진 앨범#으로 인정받았다. 앨범 한 장으로 힙합씬의 샘플링 작법의 수준을 한 단계 끌어올린, 힙합 역사상 가장 중요한 앨범 중 하나이자 인스트루멘탈 힙합과 턴테이블리즘의 영원한 클래식으로 꼽힌다.

이 앨범의 영향을 받아 1990년대 말부터 2000년대 초까지 인스트루멘탈 힙합/턴테이블리즘 쪽에서 명작이 대거 나왔는데 키드 코알라의 Some of My Best Friends Are DJs, RJD2의 Deadringer, DJ soulscape의 180g Beats, The Avalanches의 Since I Left You, 제이 딜라의 Donuts가 꼽힌다.
